A Day in Two Lives: Krispy and Alz!

Hope you enjoyed Asian/Pacific American Month here at the blog! We're wrapping up with our biggest A Day in the Life ever - two friends, one and a half lives. It's our favorite Krispy and Alz (Krispy you know as my co-host on Boba 4 Life) from A Nudge in the Right Direction, complete with Alz's famous sketches!

6:30am So originally a typical day in the life of Krispy would start at 7:25am when I would roll out of bed and stumble my way into the bathroom. However, over Memorial Day weekend, the Sister adopted a puppy and brought him home. So now my day starts at 6:30am...when I roll out of bed and stumble my way to the bathroom to get through my morning routine.

6:30am At this time Alz is without fail entirely absolutely unapologetically unconscious.

7:00am Before changing, I go let the puppy out of his sleeping crate and into his play area. Feed the puppers, play with him a little bit, set out his pee pad, give him his meds. Then while he’s eating, I clean out his sleeping crate and move his toys over.

7:30am Change for work, grab/make lunch, maybe eat some breakfast.

7:30am Still unconscious.

7:50am Out the door, check the puppy has enough water, and leave for work.

8:30am At work. I do a lot of paperwork, registering and calculating and mailing things. Also, a lot of email answering.

9:42am Wielding a star-metal sword forged in the fiery breath of black dragons, I ride my unicorn warsteed into battle against pirate zombies. After victory has been secured, I return to slumber in assurance of a job well done and a world once again safe from the menace of buccaneering undead.

11:15am Take my first break. Usually, I read my book. Sometimes, I write. Check twitter and blogs.

11:15am By this time, I am awake. Sometimes.

12:00pm At this point, so early in the day, my options are numerous and varied, but everything eventually boils down to this most vital of daily activities: INTERWEBS.

1:00pm I like taking a later lunch because the rest of the day doesn’t feel as long when I go back up. Also, there are less people in the lunch room and I can get in some more reading time.

2:00pm It’s jewelry time: sterling silver turtle pendant  with bezel-set fine silver granulation and transparent enamel. All Alz-made, from designing to making the teeny granulation balls and fusing them to the silver, wet-packing the enamel powder and kiln-firing multiple times (once for each color), measuring and soldering and shaping the bezels, soldering bezels to sheet, sawing out the turtle-shape, filing, sanding, and polishing the surfaces, bending and shaping the silver, and finally setting the enamel “stones” in the bezels. Mind you, this is the result of hours and hours of slave-labor with tweezers and torches, but when it comes together, it happens fast.

3:00pm I work for a food-related company, so sometimes at random times in the day, we get snacks. Vendors send us things or salesmen get food gifts or we get samples sent to us. These food items are usually shared with the office. So lots of snacking happens. Last Thursday, we got these delicious popsicles. Mine was coffee flavored. Mmm.

4:00pm Second break. More reading.

4:30pm Snack time, by which I mean a granola bar or a bottle of water depending on where I am and what’s on hand. And then it’s time to plot world domination.

5:00pm End of day! Shut down the computer and head home!

5:00pm World domination plot completed. Now it’s time to up the bodycount. I mean in writing, of course. Don’t look at me like that. What else could I have meant?

5:50pm Get home. My commute is not that bad for a SoCal / Los Angeles commute, but my route actually takes 25 minutes. In morning and evening rush hour traffic, it takes 45-55 minutes.

6:15pm After changing and checking some internets, I go feed the puppy and have play time with him.

6:30pm I read my current book, which is as often as not a library book from Krispy that I end up sorely regretting stealing from her because of how sordidly bad it is. If only I could sandpaper these YA literary travesties from my brain--but then I wouldn’t have any brain left by now.  I don't have any to spare as it is.

7:00pm Dinner at my grandma’s house. I play with and feed the stray cat she adopted while I’m there. I usually get in a good chunk of reading here too.

7:00pm I feed myself and also feed my masters my rats. I often work on secret projects at this time, like not-so-secret manatees or semi-secret half-assed needle embroidery that Krispy hasn’t and may never see because it basically looks like crappy crochet but took me way more time and effort to accomplish.

8:00pm Text Alz and see if she wants boba. More internet time. Writing time.

8:01pm Respond to Krispy’s text that of course I want boba. I then finish up whatever I’m doing, pack up necessities such as Fuzzy Manatee, a bag of potato chips, and the iPad, and head on over for boba and frolicsome adventures Chez Krispy.

8:45pm More play time with puppy to tire him out before bed.

9:15pm Move puppy into his sleeping crate and wait for him to get settled and sleepy.

9:30pm Hang out with Alz. We discuss books, writing, blogging, and random things that have happened during the day. I also nag Krispy to write more.  I make her watch a bunch of my TV shows with me. Including but not limited to: Criminal Minds, Law & Order: SVU, Spartacus, Grimm, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Legend of Korra, Clone Wars, and Young Justice. Also random youtube videos. Including but not limited to: Tom Hiddleston interviews, Avengers cast interviews, clips of Tom Hiddleston dancing like a loon, commercials and trailers for upcoming movies that may or may not involve Tom Hiddleston, etc.

11:00pm Shower and get ready for bed.

11:00pm Ratty playtime.

11:45pm Sleepy time for Krispy!

12:00am Internet surfing and possibly random TV/anime-watching.


12:45am Time to write more, now that it’s dark out and quiet, with the hum of the refrigerator in the background and the squeaks and thumps of cagefighting rats in the other room, and it’s time to kill more people. In writing. Who may or may not deserve it and may or may not be magic ninjas in exile shacking up with a long-suffering knight who should have known better than to pick that guy up out of the gutter even if it was raining that night.

1:00am-2:30am At some point during this time something always strikes me unconscious. I believe it is called sleep.

1) What’s your ultimate caffeine source?

Boba!!! 4 Life

Which I can only drink before 7 p.m.  Caffeine messes me up.  One day I would love to own a caffeine-free boba shop.  I know, I know, no one but me would drink it.

2) If you were stranded on an island, what book would you like to have with you?

One of Maria V. Snyder's, or one of George R. R. Martin's since it'll last me a long time.

3) Favorite music source? (Radio, Pandora, Spotify, CD, Ipod, etc)

Pandora and Spotify these days, though I used to get most of my new music from KCRW, our local public radio station

A house not in the ghetto.

We survived!!!!!! This month I edited 70,000+ words and entirely rewrote 16,677 of those. (A very NaNoWriMo number for those of you die-hards...) Added: And I'm not done yet! I'll be RevMoing til we die.

This last week my butt didn't leave my chair as I got my students through their deadlines as well. I was either editing my own work or someone else's. There's a stack of microwave dinner boxes and a very patient roommate who hasn't complained about my increasing piles of crap in the living room.

I ended with a high-octane zumba class so I could work off the extra ass I grew in the last 30 days. (If an extra ass is what's needed to be published, I'll grow 8 of them.)

Sweet and Bitter...But As Long As I Look Good

Damn that boba after 9 p.m.

Krispy and I had milk tea last night during the Bloggerpocalypse and I was up until past 5 again.  There goes the extra hours from my east coast jet lag.  I will blog my trip soon!

Thank you Susan Oloier and Kristine Asselin!  I'm so glad to have met you both. :)

I'll point to my previous posting of this award for people I've tagged.  The rules seem to have morphed, and now I'm supposed to tell you 7 more things about myself.  (Because that last 7 wasn't enough.)

I was so cheered when some of you said my life was cool after my 7 random facts LOL. I enjoy it a lot but I also deal with some annoying chronic issues.  Ironically, many of them have to do with sugar...

1. I have hyperinsulinism/hypoglycemia.  It's a huge f$*#ing issue in my life - it prevents me from signing up for anything that would keep me from food for more than 3 hours.  I constantly have to think ahead to my next meal and my hours revolve around the question, "When did I last eat?  Where can I get food?"  I get headaches and shakes all the damn time.  I come from a diabetic family on both sides, so it's not a surprise, but it's a big fat hassle.  To this day some people think it's psychological, including my RN stepmom. And I'm not ruling that out.  But seriously, I eat six times a day and I weigh just a little over 100 pounds.  I don't think that's psychological, otherwise I'd be a millionaire with my diet plan.
2. I've been insomniac my whole life.  My mom says I was even a night owl baby.  I had a rough childhood and I could barely sleep at night as a kid.  Even now my mind races and I have to take muscle relaxants if I'm expected to get up early the next day.  
3. Part of my difficulty sleeping has to do with my hypoglycemia.  If I'm too hungry, I can't fall asleep or stay asleep.  I get this light, tingly feeling in my arms like I'll float away.  My issues are all related. Fun!
4. I'm prone to day-long migraines that sometimes don't stop with Motrin, but miraculously disappear when it hits 9 p.m. or later.  Like I said - night owl.
5. After two car accidents and a lifetime of computing, my neck is janky.  I have a hard time finding pillows and I have to switch pillows 2 or 3 times a night.  These days I'm using a rolled up towel.
6. Because I danced my whole life and have a weird gait, I developed recurring bursitis in my hip in my early 20's, ending my aspirations to be a pop star backup dancer.  I did end up dancing professionally anyway (HUGE redemption!), which I'll blog about one day.  
7. I have extreme myopia (almost legally blind) and SPK, which is a severe dry eye.  I drop my eyes twice a day to produce more tears and I have to be careful when wearing contacts, which sometimes hurt.  I've worn glasses since I was 8.

As you can see, my body is a hot mess, but heck, as long as it looks good then I'm still smiling! :)

That's the L.A. mantra at least.  And now it's time to go eat my afternoon snack.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

I was never going to read this book.

I'd originally bought it as a birthday gift for my Boba 4 Eva co-vlogger Krispy - only she'd bought it four days before in a Border's closing sale.

Here I was, stuck with a creepy book with no easy return.

So I starting reading.

After 30 pages flew by I considered keeping it.

200 pages later I was hooked.  I'd stayed up until 6 a.m. reading books before, but never until 9 a.m.  (Yes, I said a.m.  Granted I didn't start until 5 a.m.)

Aptly published by Quirk, this debut novel at turns charmed, terrified, moved, and nauseated me.  (I don't recommend eating while reading...)

One of the most interesting things is seeing how Riggs wove the photos - all found and unaltered - into a narrative that was not only entertaining, but tightly woven with a terrific twist.  It's like reading an extremely well-written creative writing class prompt that continued until it became an emotionally true story.  The last two photos are just breathtaking; they stun the heart.

Jacob, the protag, has a wonderful voice, and each character is well-enunciated.  This is a rare book that stands out for its originality.  Don't you dare buy this in anything other than its hardcover - there's a cute little surprise on the cover underneath the jacket.

I'm so glad a mix-up forced me to read this book!

1. What 3 books would you take with you into your zombie apocalypse/alien invasion bunker (I’m assuming you all have one)?

Ha ha! I'm one step ahead of you. My zombipocalypse bunker IS my library. Take that, Panic Room.

But alas, it has only 3 books in it and they are:

This is going to sound really bad, but I promise you it wasn't shady at all - I played a girl attacked by a sexual predator in a Chinese soap opera in Taiwan. I got to wear the kind of old school clothes you see in the dynastic era. Again, the guy who played the "rapist" was this big teddy bear, it was very professional and he barely touched me. (My other option was to play a concubine and my mom was like "NO." I was fifteen.)


3. What song is stuck in your head right now?


I'm playing Christina Perri's album on Spotify and even though "bang bang bang" is on, I've got "miles" stuck in my head because it's very meaningful to me right now.




4. What celebrity would play you in the movie about your life?


Me, duh.


5. What did you eat for breakfast this morning?


Oh gawd I wish I could forget! Din Tai Fun, the famous dumpling joint, was too crowded so we ended going to the boba shop next door and ordered two unexpectedly spicy dishes that didn't behave like polite guests in our empty tummies.


6. If you could go back in time for one day, what time would you revisit and why?


Gorging my face off at dinner on the set of First Daughter. There was sliced prime rib, a stir-fry station, an omelet station, dessert table of cookies and cakes, and some southern entrees.

7. What was the last movie you saw in the theater?

1. I am certified in canine behavior from the ASPCA in NYC. I've worked with everybody from Rottweilers to Pomeranians. I've even taught a shelter dog to moonwalk on command.
2. During the week I shared a makeup trailer with Katie Holmes (I sat in the next chair), I learned that her life was quite normal (she was with Chris Klein at the time.)
3. I'm learning to beatbox (at a glacial pace) at the request of one of my a capella group members.
4. My mom once met director Ang Lee and went on an on about me. She must have been memorably pushy because when I met Ang Lee a few months later, he said, "I remember your mom."
5. I was Jackie Chan's interpreter when he came to Harvard as a guest and there's a photo of us in the Boston Globe laughing. I had to get up at 4 a.m. to go to the airport to meet his private jet (Zhang Zhiyi was on it, sleeping) and I got to ride around campus in his limo all day with his entourage.
6. Number of times I've thrown my back out in a dance-off at a club/party: 2

Thanks to social networking, my celebrity crushes are well aware of how much I stalk support them.  So You Think You Can Dance's Robert Taylor, Jr. even responded to my tweet about dreaming he was my soulmate:

But the most epic win last year was the conclusion to my 10-year-hunt for Dante Basco, the cutest guy who ever asked for my number.  (The most famous was someone from the Matrix but he was 15+ years older than me and I didn't recognize him.)

Dante himself not only commented on the post, but retweeted to his legion of stalkers followers.  And yes, ladies, he did apologize for losing my number.  SEE FOR YOURSELF.

In addition to his great sense of humor, Dante is committed to the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community and has formed a production company to tell our stories - and his lovely lady helps produce.  They just finished shooting their next film, Hang Loose, in Hawaii so I hope you'll support him when it comes out.

TwiHardFact: Dante lived with Justin Chon while in HI.  I can't tell who is luckier.

Enough with the stress! I recently moved and felt so burdened by some previous and current roommate issues, that I had to kick myself out of mopey into thankful with a gratitude list. Here is a handful of what I'm blessed with:

1) I had so much help moving in 

2) the California sun is back

3) my roommate is gone all weekend :)

4) I'm healthy

5) I get to live with my dog again

6) life goes on and is a blessing
