Deja Vu Blogfest: I Can Hold You Til You Cry

The Deja Vu Blogfest is hosted by DL Hammons, Katie Mills, Lydia Kang, and Nicole Ducleroir.  Today we recycle a blog post that deserves to see the light of the internetz once again.

I chose one of the first posts on this new blog back in January 2011.  It's one of the few that received zero comments.  (The other posts that received no comments were my Japanese quake relief ones - so sad - and reading challenges.)

I Can Hold You Til You Cry
originally posted 1/17/11

One thing people don't know about me is that I was in a really woo-woo graduate program for counseling psychology.  We regularly cried in class and did therapy on each other.

At the same time, I worked evenings at a well-known investment bank, assisting people who were younger than me and hundreds of thousands of dollars richer.  That firm was one of the first to crash during the recession and I was laid off just in time for my first NaNoWriMo.

Therapy by day, i-banking by night.  Yup.

The last class I took in my counseling program was Expressive Arts Therapy.  For my final project, I made a blog presentation: Temenos: An Expressive Arts Journal.  You've been warned, I was deep in the woo.

(Prize if you know where my post title is from)

  1. I love the photo you used on this post..... and I have no idea where the post title is from and I am a little intimidated by the graduate program in counseling -- although the crying in class sounds very much like yoga teacher training -- we cried a lot in circle time...

  2. Oh your life always sounds exciting Sophia..what haven't you done yet! i have no idea about the title but maybe from one of your fav. books! in therapy the best feeling comes when someone cries..a bit morbid but such a break through:-)

  3. Won't pretend I know where your post title comes from, though it was quite interesting when I read it.

Also, each time I've come here and saw Dante Basco's picture on the side, I just want to squee!!

  4. Hmm. Something you learned in Expressive Arts Therapy? Something your best buddy at the investment banking firm said to you right after you found out you were laid off? I'm trying to think of a song or poem, but coming up empty. Hope you tell us.

I met you at the Warm Fuzzies Blogfest. I like how the blogfests throw some of the same bloggers together again.

  5. I remember reading this post! I think I found it when I was trying to figure out what the heck woo-woo therapy is. Haha. You are truly a Jill of all trades!

No idea where your title comes from, but you should come watch War Horse with me because I'm pretty sure it'll turn me into a bucket of tears.

  6. Nothing wrong with a little WOO WOO now and then. :) Your Week 4 entry, the Imaginal Language Arts, is my favorite. I kind of love your poem!

  7. Oh I know the woo woo. In my group counseling class in grad school, we sat in a circle and then our teacher somehow got most of us to cry. He was either very practiced or carried tear gas in his pocket.
I remember walking out of the first class completely shocked.
    It's funny now though.

  15. I can't imagine having that kind of intense emotion in class all the time. I would've been a wreck. OR, I would be happier. Hm...

  19. I think I would really like a class where you do therapy on each other. It would be very intense and unsettling (and woo woo!, yes!) but what a learning experience - with real world application - so many people don't know how to deal with negative situations or reactions and I see it cause vicious cycles all the time! Thanks for sharing, I even peaked at your class blog.

  20. All I know is that I find myself singing that drippy old Dan Hill song: "I wanna hold you 'til I cry, 'til we both break down and die". Yeah, I know I mixed up cry and die, but I just like it better that way. I would probably have failed your class by making really inappropriate jokes when I was supposed to be engaged in therepeutic crying.

  21. Regular therapy for your classmates had to be great material for future books, right?

And before this, I didn't really know that you could have a night banking job!

  22. A banking job huh? :D Thought you hated numbers!
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
